Winter Cycling and a sock sale!

This winter weather has been out of the ordinary for winter cycling. Getting in a 40-45 miler is quite a feat in the middle of winter, but this year it’s been no problem. Even a century is not out of the question. Last weekend was a good one for riding – cold in the morning but warming up to comfortable riding levels, that is if you have the right gear. I saw a few Facebookers post that it was too cold to ride last weekend. Too cold? Not even close.

I can ride into the negative digits because I have the gear to get me there comfortably. But remember, good, high tech cycling gear (or any other specific gear for that matter) is not cheap, but you’ll never regret spending the money.

Last weekend I was able to get by with a thin base layer, a short-sleeved jersey and a long sleeve jersey that came off as I warmed up. On the legs I had leg warmers on, but for colder mornings (low 30′s or less and not getting above 50) I always go with my Pearl Izumi AMFib Bib tights. I wear those down to the negative digits and stay nice and warm once I warm up which takes me about two miles on a frigid day. They are so warm that I can’t wear them above 50 or so degrees. I love them, and have no affiliation with Pearl Izumi.

On really cold days I also add a full face balaclava, good cycling gloves ( I have a thick pair and a thinner pair for different temps) and never leave without my warm wool socks (get the new AM thick and warm woolie boolie socks $5 off by clicking here ) and my neoprene shoe covers to stop the wind from freezing my toes. Oh and when it’s really cold I wear a wind-proof cyclcing jacket with fleece on the inside as my outside layer. It’s all about layering to keep you warm without sweating. Too much sweat will freeze you when you stop for a break.

Just a few pics from the weekend.
